It might sound unorthodox but breakfast potatoes are a popular breakfast item all around the world. Eating fried food for breakfast is a Transylvanian tradition that has been incorporated into Britain and then America. Fried breakfast potatoes are different from French fries in their nutritional content. If you have a deep fryer in your house, why not use it to make a delicious breakfast? Today, I’ll share two home fried potatoes recipes that you can make in your deep fryer.
Making Fried Breakfast Potatoes
Potatoes are a multifaceted vegetable. You can practically add them to any dishes and they’ll be tasty. You can prepare a potato dish by boiling, frying with a deep fryer or air fryer, roasting, baking, steaming or mashing potatoes. You can add them in your breakfast burritos or omelets to enhance their taste but starting your morning with deep fried breakfast potatoes is something else. More people are skipping breakfast day by day. But a full breakfast in the morning helps you energize yourself for the rest of the day. Now, it’s believed that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
If you’re wondering how to make fried potatoes for breakfast, it’s not different from deep frying potatoes in general. You can fry breakfast potatoes any way you want but I’ll share two deep fried potatoes recipes that you can make on your deep fryer. The potatoes will be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. But you need to follow the instructions thoroughly and need to be patient since potatoes can lose their flavor pretty easily.
What You Need
You’ll need these ingredients for a serving of 4:
- Russet Potatoes – 2, Large
- Vegetable/Olive Oil – 6-8 cups
- Warm Water – 2 cups
- White Sugar – ⅓ cup
- Salt
How to Make
1. Preparing the Potatoes
If you want a recipe for deep fried potatoes that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, you would need to soak them in warm water. Here’s how to make crispy potato chips at home:
- Carefully wash the potatoes and remove all the dirt and debris off of them
- While washing the potatoes, don’t take off the skin from the potatoes
- Cut down the potatoes into little cubes
- Dry the potatoes using a kitchen towel
- Take a bowl, pour the warm water in it and dissolve the white sugar in the water
- Put all of the potatoes in the warm water
- Let the potatoes soak the water and the sugar for 15 minutes
- Take out the potatoes from the water and dry over paper towels
2. Preparing the Dish
After you’ve soaked and dried the potatoes thoroughly, follow this step-by-step guide to make your fried breakfast potatoes:
- Pour the oil in a cleaned deep fryer and heat it at 375℉
- Put the dry potatoes in the oil
- Deep fry the potatoes for about 5 minutes
- The potatoes should be golden by now. If not, heat for some more
- Take out the potatoes and use paper towels to dry off the oil
- Season the potatoes with salt. You can also sprinkle chili flakes if you feel like it
Making Southern Fried Breakfast Potatoes
Here’s another potato preparation you can make for your fried potatoes breakfast. But you’ll need a sauce pot on top of having a deep fryer.
1. Ingredients
For making your healthy homemade potato chips, you’ll need these ingredients for serving 4 people:
- Water – 8 cups
- Russet Potatoes – 3, Large
- Baking Soda – ½ tsp
- Vegetable/Peanut Oil – 4 cups
- Salt
Many people prefer red skin breakfast potatoes but they’re only good for roasting and not deep frying. However, these are the ingredients you’ll need for making the sauce:
- Mayonnaise – 1 cup
- Minced Garlic – 2 tsp
- Smoked Paprika – 1 tsp
- Cayenne Pepper – ½ tsp
- Tomato Paste – ¼ cup
- Sea Salt – ½ tsp
- Sherry Vinegar – 2 tsp
- Lemon Juice – 1 tsp
2. How to Make
After you’ve collected all the necessary ingredients for the recipe, follow these simple steps to make your homemade crispy baked potato chips:
- Take all the water in a sauce pot and heat it using a medium-high temperature
- Peel the potatoes and cut them
- Pour the baking soda and then the potatoes on the water just when the water starts boiling
- Boil the potatoes for 1 minute over the sauce pot
- Take out the potatoes and dry them off
- Dry the sauce pot and put the potatoes on it again
- Use medium heat on the sauce pot to completely dry off the potatoes. Cook like this for a minute until the water is all gone
- Take out the potatoes over a rimmed baking sheet and cool them down
- Put the oil in the deep fryer and heat it at 375℉
- Once the oil is heated for deep frying, take a handful of potatoes and put them in the oil. Put all of the potatoes by handfuls
- Use a wire skimmer to stir the potatoes occasionally
- Cook the potatoes for 5-6 minutes until they become golden brown
- After the potatoes are done, take them out using the wire skimmer and put them over a baking sheet lined with paper towel
- Cool down the potatoes for 5 minutes
- For making the sauce, take all the ingredients mentioned above in a bowl and stir the mixture as fast as you can
- Add salt to the potatoes according to your preference and serve them with the sauce
